Implementation of an online examination management system at Lufthansa Technical Training and its introduction to members of the European Aviation Maintenance Training Committee (EAMTC)

ASTech’s GEMS Online Exam has been cleared by the National Aviation Authority of Germany (LBA) and is now being used by ASTech’s long-term customer Lufthansa Technical Training (LTT) at their training sites in Hamburg and Frankfurt. The system was also introduced to training managers of Part-147 training organisations or airlines, who participated at the recent EAMTC (European Aviation Maintenance Training Committee) meeting in Lugano, Switzerland.

Paul Nolan, Managing Director at ASTech comments:

"We are delighted about the successful implementation of GEMS Online Exam at LTT. ASTech and LTT worked very closely to produce this world-class solution. Running exams online on tablet devices follows the current trend within the market of replacing paper based materials using online solutions.”

As presented in a case study at the EAMTC meeting, GEMS Online Exam offers a number of advantages over paper based exams and especially meets emerging eLearning trends in the aviation maintenance training industry.

GEMS Online Exam reduces costs as the system offers exam providers a way to hold online exams for candidates withouth the overhead of producing large numbers of printed examination sheets. Further, the system saves the environment, reduces storage requirements and, due to automatic exam generation, saves time. The system copes with the needs of the new generation known as Generation Y or Millenials. Millenials are highly technology literate, using tablet devices, laptops and smartphones for business, in their studies or free-time. The system also increases efficiency as examination results are available to examiners immediately after an exam has concluded. Further, an analysis of the exam and exam questions is produced automatically and immediately available for review.

Feedback received by LTT and the EAMTC members is very positive – the system is described as very modern, professional and user-friendly for both, instructors and trainees.

GEMS Online Exam is closely integrated with the existing GEMS Basic, GEMS Type and GEMS Fundamentals - automating the generation of paper-based exams- and therefore allows the roll out of an end to end examination management system.
